Summary

The MALTA project aims to generate high-added value products in key sectors for the Basque Country, such as Oil & gas, Health and Food, through the development of mini-reactors and their components. The final objective is double:

  • It aims to achieve a competitive advantage for Basque companies by reducing production costs, environmental impact and increased sustainability.
  • On the other hand, help Basque society facing two of its most important challenges: aging and age-related diseases.

For that, MALTA Project will perform the proof of concept of optimized production of 8 high-added value products by the development of 8 lab-scale prototypes for the three sectors mentioned: Oil & Gas, Health and Food.

The MALTA Project is committed to developing and applying to these sectors what in the chemical sector is considered as the next revolution, the Process Intensification, where different processes are combined in one by the use of mini-reactors.

The mini-reactors of the MALTA project are miniaturized devices in which a reaction is carried out and a separation/distribution stage by membranes can also be integrated.

In this way, substantial improvements are achieved over conventional processes, in terms of size reduction (reduction of process steps) and process cost, as well as the improvement on performance and energy efficiency.
